After The AP: Data Science Challenge (2023)

Do you have 1-2 weeks of class time with students after the AP Exam? If so, utilize this free project to extend your students’ learning using:

  • big data (26 variables)

  • state of the art tools (R coding)

  • advanced models (multiple regression & machine learning)

It's time to bring AP students' learning into the 21st Century, and it all starts here:

Challenge: Predict which colleges "pay off" the most

Using big data from the Dept of Ed, students build models to evaluate the best and worst colleges for conquering student debt.

See Project >>

The project provides a gentle introduction to data science tools. You do not need prior coding experience to complete it successfully. For more info, check out the project link above, where you can get registered, complete the project, and (optionally) submit student models for our nationwide prediction competition.

So, after the big exam, toss your TI-1984 to the side and watch your students' faces light up with the curiosity, as they answer compelling questions using real data and models of their own creation. We can't wait to see what they come up with.

Let's skew it!

Two additional notes:

  • Pilot: This is the first year of this project, so we're releasing it as a pilot. We ask for your patience and feedback, which will help us improve for future iterations :)

  • Shoutout: A huge thank you to our partners at Data Science 4 Everyone, CourseKata, and NC State Data Science Academy. Without their help, this all wouldn't have been possible.
